The article deals with the shaping of Russian ethnic identity in the context of the ideas of ‘nation’ and ‘race’ that emerged in Western Europe in the 18th c. Following European tendencies Catherine II and Russian educated elite were interested in ‘constructing’ of ethnic identity even if the constructs hardly had anything to do with reality.
