Западноевропейское общество раннего Средневековья было традиционным в отношении распределения гендерных ролей. Однако нарушение стабильного порядка существования иноземными нашествиями и долгим периодом вооружённых конфликтов приводили к появлению исключений из правил. Примером этого является женщина-воительница Этельфлед, «Госпожа Мерсии» (869 или 870–918), дочь короля Альфреда Великого, выполнявшая функции правителя и полководца. Анализ источников позволяет сделать вывод, что подобный пример исторической биографии воспринимался в Средние века двояко — и как героический, и как очень нетипичный. Фактически же, для самой героини военные реалии её жизни были во многом вынужденными, свершившимися под воздействием внешних обстоятельств. Для лучшего понимания этих обстоятельств биография Этельфлед рассматривается на фоне политической борьбы и тесно связанной с ней семейной жизни правящей династии, взаимоотношений её членов между собой, их участия в общественной и культурной жизни.

The Western European society of the early Middle Ages was traditional in terms of the distribution of gender roles. However, the disruption of a stable order of existence by foreign invasions and a long period of armed conflict led to the emergence of exceptions to the rules. An example of this is the female warrior Aethelflaed, "Lady of Mercia" (869 or 870-918), daughter of king Alfred the Great, who served as ruler and commander. An analysis of the sources allows us to conclude that such an example of historical biography was perceived in the Middle Ages in two ways — both as heroic and as very atypical. In fact, for the heroine herself, the military realities of her life were largely forced, accomplished under the influence of external circumstances. To understand these circumstances better, Aethelflaed's biography is examined against the background of interconnections between power struggle and the family life of the ruling dynasty, the relationships of its members among themselves, and their participation in public and cultural life.
