В статье рассматривается история (1918–1932 гг.) демократического движения в престижных императорских университетах Японии, известных лояльным отношением к государству в эпоху Мэйдзи, но впоследствии под впечатлением народных бунтов обратившихся к критике властей. Движение проявилось в двух взаимосвязанных формах – как просветительская деятельность либеральных профессоров и как студенческий протест. Кризисы послевоенных лет привели к резкому ухудшению положения выпускников вузов, и реакцию на это впервые в истории Японии можно охарактеризовать как студенческое движение не только за переустройство общества, но и за расширение университетской автономии и свободу научных исследований.

The article examines the history of the democratic movement in the prestigious Imperial universities of Japan (1918 to 1932). In the Meiji era this universities were known for loyal attitude to the state, but popular revolt in the country forced them to criticize the policy of the authorities. The movement consists of two interrelated parts – educational activities of liberal professors, and student protest. The economic crises and depressions of the post-war period affected the sharp deterioration of the situation of University graduates, so for the first time in the history of Japan we can already talk about the “student movement”, which fought not only for the social reconstruction of society, but also for the expansion.
