The English Revolution of the mid-17th century and the English intellectual world

В статье речь идет о влиянии событий Английской революции 1640–1660 гг. на интеллектуальную жизнь общества. Особое внимание уделено анализу печатной продукции, в частности изданий Библии на английском языке и периодических изданий; состоянию грамотности в стране; образовательным программам деятелей революции. Отмечается воздействие революции на социальную активность англичан, вызванную, прежде всего, изменениями менталитета молодежи и женщин. Эти проблемы не были предметом специального исследования в отечественной науке; обратиться к ним побудило творческое наследие видного советского историка М.А. Барга, ученицей которого являлся автор данной статьи.

The article discusses the influence of the English revolution of 1640–1660 on the intellectual life of the English society. A good deal of attention is paid to the analysis of printed materials during the specified period, in particular, to the editions of the Bible in English and periodicals; to the level of literacy in the country; to educational programs developed by the leaders of the revolution. The author emphasizes the impact of the revolution on the social activity in England caused, first of all, by changes in mentality of youths and women. The above-mentioned problems have not been discussed in Russian historiography, and the author’s interest in these was a direct influence of the works by the prominent Soviet historian M.A. Barg who had been a supervisor to her postgraduate research.
