Миф об амазонках оказался исключительно живуч и активно применялся в разных целях, в том числе и в политических, в Античности, в Средние века, в Новое время. В статье рассматривается, как миф об амазонках использовался в политике России XVIII в. Речь идет о малоизвестной странице российской истории — о формировании князем Г.А. Потёмкиным в Крыму роты вооруженных женщин.

The myth about female warriors has been used for various purposes, including diplomatic and military, ones. This article examines a little-known episode that took place during the visit of Catherine II's court and foreign diplomats to the Crimea in 1787. The purpose of the visit was to demonstrate the military might of the Russian state to the Sublime Porte and her western allies. The foreign diplomats who travelled with the Empress were quite impressed by a corps of armed women under the command of E. I. Sarandova, which had been specifically organized by Prince Gregory A. Potemkin for this occasion. The author suggests that this episode should have evoked — intentionally or not — the legend of the encounter between Alexander the Great and Thalestris, the queen of the Amazons, who was accompanied by a three-hundred strong female cavalry force.
