В статье исследуется понятие женщины-“virago”, востребованного в средневековой историографии образа для легитимации власти женщин в патриархатном обществе. Как показывает автор, вторгаясь в мужской мир власти, женщины со времен раннего Средневековья и до наших дней вынуждены были символически «превращаться» в мужчину.

The article deals with the notion of virago, man-woman who borrows and adopts man’s symbols of power to strengthen her own position as a ruler. As the research shows, intrusion into man’s sphere of politics and ruling forces a woman to make certain concessions in favor of the public opinion that more than often “does not see” her occupying an official post. In such a case her conscious mimicry becomes her main concession; she changes the appearance of a woman-ruler, she turns symbolically into a man. The signs of this transformation are manifold: change of appearance (cutting hair, wearing man’s wig, false beard, etc.), man’s attire, military dress, armor, insignia, man’s titles, minting her own coin, using the authority of her masculine relatives — father, brother, husband. The notion of virago that first appears in the Early Middle Ages and still exists up to the Modern Times proves that a woman can legitimize her status of a ruler in the eyes of her entourage only having symbolically turned into a man.
