The article deals with the early history of the female monastery of St John in Arelat/Arles founded by the Saint bishop Caesarius (470-542). In particular, the activities of the Abbess Caesaria have been analyzed. It if shown that although enclosure remained a model for female monasticism, the monastery of St John represented Bishop’s authority and played an important role in Christianization. The Abbess’ and sisters’ activities were not limited by the monastery walls: the sermons by St Caesarius that had been copied in the monastery created his reputation of popular preacher known far beyond the boundaries of the diocese of Arles. Thus Abbess Caesaria could be viewed as one of the key figures in the process of construing the saint bishop’s memory.
