Soviet patriot as an ‘enemy of the people’: the dilemma of individual and officially prescribed identity

В статье рассматривается проблема противостояния/сотрудничества арестованных советских людей и следователей НКВД. Ориентированные на выявление «контрреволюционных, диверсионных, шпионских организаций», сотрудники НКВД арестовывали невинных людей и, используя всевозможные способы, получали от них «признания» в несовершенных преступлениях. Один из аргументов – признания необходимы в интересах советского государства. После вынужденного «признания» размышления о предательстве (себя, оговоренных людей, идеи) могли стать причиной самоубийства или сумасшествия.

The article deals with the problem of conflict/cooperation between the prisoners and the NKVD investigators. The NKVD officers aimed at the detection of the ‘contra-revolutionary, subversive and espionage organizations’; they arrested innocent people, and using various methods, obtained their ‘confessions’ of crimes the latter had not committed. One of the arguments was that the confessions were in the interests of the Soviet state. After the ‘confessions’ had been forced of prisoners their reflections on betrayal (of oneself, other people, or of an idea) could lead them to suicide or to madness.
